My thesis discussed the role of PPGIS in urban planning, how it can be improved and better integrated into the planning process. PPGIS also enables communication to take place on maps and models in an intelligible visual form to those who have no expertise in its technical basis (Carver, Evans, Kingston, & Turton, 2001). Both PPGIS and VGI are related terms that define a process for gathering and using non-expert spatial information (Brown & Kyttä, 2014). In this study, we present a PPGIS method for spatially iden-tifying and assessing multiple elements of environmental justice (i.e., activity diversity, user diversity and PPUE) in popular areas by the water in Helsinki Metropolitan Area (HMA), with the goal of informing urban blue space design and management. We compare four types of data: social media, sports tracking, mobile phone operator and public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS) data in a case study from Helsinki, Finland. Our results show that user-generated geographic information sources provide useful insights about being in, moving through and perceiving urban green "Participatory mapping is at the forefront of community engagement, social change, and sustainability practice. This article identifies the critical conditions for meaningful use of public participation GIS (PPGIS) tools to support the making of master plan in Helsinki. In sunny Oslo for the first conference of the Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries, with a wide range of approaches to the digitalising humanities.I’ll present today (15.3.) on narrative approaches to public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS) in urban planning, a paper co-authored with Maarita Kahila, Jenni Kuoppa, and Marketta Kyttä. We used this method in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finland, to examine: (1) the diversity and spatial distribution of clusters based on the activities undertaken in urban blue space; (2) the diversity of users in each cluster, representing a composite measure of income, age and family income, and; (3) the extent of perceived problems and unpleasant experiences (PPUE) in each cluster.
